Last night Diana and I watched an Olympics Softball game out at Fengtai softball park in Beijing. The stands weren't as full as they should have been but a good number of people turned out especially the locals. The game definitely highlighted what the Olympics games are all about. Most of the local Chinese crowd were attending their first or close-to-first game of their life. Many of them did not understand the rules or what exactly they were watching. This became especially apparent when the announcers would describe the rules of the game between every "ups" (i.e half inning) and also during any significant breaks.

Lessons were announced for the rules of the games as well as proper cheering etiquette.

Fencing

I was fortunate enough to be invited along to an Olympic Fencing competition. I have never watched fencing before and I wasn't aware of all of the rules but it was really good times. The experience of being at the competition and watching the reactions of the home team crowds and other audience members was great.

The length of the video is a bit long, I apologize. I was attempting to show what the venue itself looks like as well as give some idea of the experience inside.

We headed out to watch Olympic rowing today. After three hours of watching mens/womens single & double sculling I can honestly state that it is much more exciting to watch this on TV. Sitting in the stands in hot n' muggy weather and not really seeing the boats isn't all that fun.

We had tickets to see the U.S vs. Japan Olympics soccer match so we packed up and headed off to Tianjian. We rode the new high speed rail linking the two cities which provided an amazing fast and smooth ride. Quite cool.

The video is very dark but you can somewhat make out what is happening. Last night after dinner I passed by a standard construction site that is incredibly common in Beijing. A few of the workers were still at the site which was unexpected as I thought the government had kicked them out. I then realized that I have never blogged about the construction sites in Beijing particularly to describe how the workers live onsite.

All foreigners in China must register with the local police department within 24 hours of their arrival. If you are staying in a hotel this piece is taken care of for you but if you live within a private residence then you must do it yourself. Although this isn't a new rule/law its enforcement in the run up to the Olympics has grown in intensity.

10 Weddings

Chinese people have a very different take on weddings that we do in the western. The first major difference is that they are injecting a *lot* of western style into the traditional eastern wedding. Dresses are now more traditional western white than traditional eastern red and the ceremonies are more church-ish than, again, traditional. It doesn't, however, stop them from doing the traditions of the past. During our recent trip to Hangzhou we ran across several weddings performing the "Traditional" customs en-masse.

Sitting in a single place we saw 10 different weddings occurring at the exact same time, going further up the hill or around the are we ran across several more. In total I think we saw 15 weddings occurring all within walking distance of each other and in most cases, queuing up for the same picture/ride/ceremony. In-ter-est-ing.

While in Hangzhou we snuck around the Dragon well tea fields. I have to say it was actually pretty cool and it did make me want to drink more tea. You should see our tea cabinet now, its quite full, oh hey, by the way, we have a tea cabinet. Isn't that crazy?

While in Shanghai last we took a trip down to Hangzhou leaving from Shanghai South train station. The station reminds me of an alien spaceship, not that I've been on one or have anything to compare it to but still.. really its like an alien spaceship.

While in Shanghai China recognized the victims of the Sichuan earthquake with a nationwide 3 minutes of silence. At the time I was on a subway, everyone on the subway stopped, stood silently and waited until the 3 minutes passed.
